Coming from Ho Chi Minh city where the average temperature is 27 Celsius degrees all year round, I am eager to experience the coming dry and chilly winter in Beijing, China.
My real name is Chau, which means pearl in Vietnamese. It is really not my favorite name, so I hope you will call me Julie. My undergraduate major is Business Administration. I am attending the Tsinghua University's Global Business Journalism program, which does not relate to my background, yet I am so excited about it.
Something about my roots, I am the fourth generation Chinese-Vietnamese to be exact. On my father's side, my great-grandparents left Fujian Province because of World War II and so did my mother's family who were originated in Guangdong Province.
To my father's desire, I started learning Mandarin when I was a child and now besides my mother tongue Vietnamese, I am able to speak fluent Chinese. I owe that to my parents.
Before coming to Tsinghua, I admit I was a bit nervous despite travelling to China a couple of times for business and personal reasons. This is the first time I have been away from home for such a long time. Plus the fact of being out of school for a couple of years, I became concerned that I cannot catch up with my peers.
I came here without much expectation, but to my surprise, everything was going fine so far. Everyone is very helpful and friendly.
I found out this is an environment in which I am able to excel. I started slowly but I am confident that I would make a progress. Now, I am ready to start my new journey at Tsinghua University.
I am looking forwards to the National Holiday to make a trip around Beijing. My plan is to explore the whole China and possibly my next stop will be my ancestral hometown. You are welcomed to join me :)
